What do 5G services mean for your smartphones?
‘5G’ stands for the fifth generation in consumer mobile wireless services. This is an entirely new kind of wireless signal that has everything to do with your smartphone experiences, connected tablet devices, the speed with which you can surf the mobile Internet, video download speeds, zero buffering, the smoothness of your video chats with friends, etc. Online shoppers should find 5G services interesting because this wireless technology makes for a blinding fast experience when navigating online shopping apps.
Faster is better
5G technologies will allow users and consumers to browse the mobile Internet at dramatically faster speeds. This is because this technology operates on a spectrum that substantially boosts the speed at which data is transferred across the network. 5G services will empower more wireless consumers to download and upload Ultra HD and 3D video. The technology will also be able to accommodate thousands additional of Internet-connected devices that will comprise the Internet of Things.5G technologies will potentially increase download speeds for consumers up to 10 gigabits per second. This means that a movie in ‘full HD’ resolution can be downloaded into a device in a few seconds. The technology achieves this by reducing latency significantly.
Innovation is driving 5G
Chipmaker Intel and device manufacturer Nokia are slated to launch 5G-related technologies this year. Major industry players such as Intel, Deutsche Telecom, and Huawei have already conducted successful over-the-air 5G tests. Observers note that this test is critical because it is “a critical step” toward future commercial launches of 5G solutions. These will be capable of supporting billions of connected devices by the year 2019.
The infrastructure of 5G networks will be different from current systems. 5G systems will operate on a massive deployment of small cell technology that enables the network to handle heavy and sustained data transmission tasks. Experts note that dozens of “small, unobtrusive shoe-box sized cells can be mounted on street lights, buildings, and other public infrastructure.”The scope of 5G technologies is so vast “that its full economic effect will be realized across the globe by 2035.”
When is the commercial launch of 5G?
Telecom services provider Sprint has stated plans to launch its 5G network in the US in early 2019. Following this, market rivals such as AT& T and Verizon will also launch similar services for the average consumer. Meanwhile, T-Mobile is working to create full support for 5G services by the year 2020. These market players note that subscribers may have to pay higher fees for using their 5G networks. Many market players feel that mature 5G networks will be at least 20 times faster than current 4G networks.
Other uses of 5G in smart cars
Smart cars can be a dominant mode of transportation for the future. These vehicles need reliable, secure, and very low-latency bandwidth in the form of 5G connections. Chipmaker Qualcomm and carmaker Hyundai have collaborated to make some prototypes of smart vehicles. These machines “set the stage for future innovations.” Future innovations in smart car technologies may possibly include “augmented reality for dashboard and infotainment purposes, artificial intelligence-assisted autonomous vehicle technologies, and hyper-accurate real-time mapping technologies.”
